How much should you pay your designer?

Pricing amongst web deigners is one of the most random phenomenons this author has ever observed. To an uninformed consumer, analyzing the various hourly rates for web designers can be a very stressful and confounding experience. You've probably seen advertisements for designers on Craigslist or elsewhere claiming they will build your web site for $199.00. On the other end of the spectrum, you may have called a design firm who informed you that their minimum fee for a design project is $3,000.00.

Like every other industry out there, some people in this industry overcharge and others just do poor work.

If someone tries to charge you $2,000.00 for a five page, static web site, they are probably pulling the wool over your eyes, so to speak. Someone who offers to build your web site for $159.00 is most likely going to give you a piece of garbage template site with your logo pasted in upper left-hand corner.

There are exceptions, of course.

There are many college students and people who are just starting out in web design who will build your site for next to nothing. Keep in mind that college students typically have four classes and a social life to keep track of aside from your web project, so affirm the reliability of the college types before you commit to them.
